Shallow water reefs in Hawaii are increasingly threatened by coastal development, soil erosion, fishing pressure and impacts from climate change such as increased intensity and strength of storms, bleaching, ocean acidification, and disease. In the future, scientists think that shallow water coral reef fish and other critters may spend more of their time in deeper waters to find refuge from these harmful impacts, making it important to discover and map these shallow and deep coral.
